  1. Hi James,
I’m a 3rd year maths student at Melbourne Uni with a budding interest in philosophy, I found your page a while ago, I think via the MUPC Facebook group.

There is a particularly poignant scene in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath in which surplus fruit is contaminated and burned by bank-owned farms, under armed protection, whilst masses of literally starving families look on from the roadside – this for the purpose of ensuring the market price of the fruit remains high.

I would love to see some exegesis of your views on the relationship between classical liberalism and utilitarianism/effective altruism – and possibly also how this ties in with your views on income inequality.

Relatedly, my notion – albeit at the moment very naive – of utilitarianism (essentially Peter Singer’s brand) suggests to me that the wealthy are morally obliged to distribute some of their wealth among the poor (wealth can surely generate more utility in desperate hands than in already wealthy ones), and thus that a government which enforces this obligation would be doing a good (utilitarian) thing. I would be interested in your views on this topic.

Thanks for sparking my intrigue with this blog!
